Seinfeld aired July 5th, 1989. The original cast was billed as Jerry Seinfeld, Michael Richards, Lee Garlington, and Jason Alexander. The pilot, aka The Seinfeld Chronicles, was written by Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld, and directed by Art Wolff. Art Wolff would later be replaced by Tom Cherones for the next five seasons. In this episode we are introduced to the characters Jerry and George as the converse about whether or not a button on George's shirt is to high. We also are introduced to a waitress by the name of Claire, who was originally thought to be the other lead in the show, played by Lee Garlngton. The episode really shows how different Seinfeld was from other shows on at the time. It was just a bunch of friends, sitting around and talking about their day and making fun of events and things that happened in that day, simple enough. The "plot", and I use that word loosely being that really none of these shows have a huge plot, of this episode is a lady friend of Jerry's is coming to stay with him in his apartment for a few days when she comes to the city and he believes she wants more then just a free place to stay. Not the best plot to introduce the show, but it works none the less at introducing the characters and showing its brand of humor.
The character Kessler, later changed to Kramer, is also introduced here. His character is not fully discovered here and won't be until around the end of season two but he does show how weird he is by coming into Jerry's apartment at 1 a.m, helping himself to a sandwich, and asking to talk to a girlfriend of Jerry's to persuade her to come stay with Jerry. Out of the entire series, this is not the greatest episode nor is it in the top 10 best episodes, or the top 20, but it does set up the series nicely. Verdict on the episode comes in at a 5/10 which is average. But don't worry, there are many more episodes to come with plenty of yada yadas, in the vaults, and as the show says about itself, nothing.
